While they work the same they are light years apart in usefulness. Not sure how many do it, but I’ve heard of the more expensive ones blipping.Īnd for the record: yes I’ve ridden a few bikes with an add on quick shifter and yes I’ve demoed a bike with a factory one. There is exactly zero reason to ride aggressively on a public road to the point you would use a quickshifter for anything more than an add on system can simply trigger a squirt of fuel from the injector for a short burst giving a “blip” of fuel, hence an auto blip. For an average street rider, as I stated earlier, it’s nothing but a talking point and you’re fooling yourself if you think otherwise. For milliseconds per lap on a track, yeah, I get it. On a fully “electrified” bike, something like an S1000RR or new R1, the systems can look at the entire process the bike is going through and adjust ignition cutout accordingly making it more useful and easier on the bike. If you’re not doing that, it’s hard on the transmission gears. If you’re plunking around, riding normally say to and from work, you’re better off using the clutch or clutchless shifting because the time a quickshifter cuts the ignition is static and is depending on quick and decisive movements of the shift lever. The usefulness of an add on quick shifter is directly related to aggressiveness of your acceleration.
